It is the largest covered bridge in Illinois and the only covered bridge in Whiteside County. The original structure, built in the early 1900s, was leading to an unsafe T-intersection and had become dangerous. In response to the need of the Whiteside County Highway Department for public welfare, Wendler Engineering Services, Inc. accepted the challenge of designing this unique covered bridge. Richard A. Baumann, president and registered structural and professional engineer, and Scott A. Brown, registered professional engineer, worked together on this project. Mindful of its structural integrity, Baumann and Brown drew upon their engineering skills to reposition the bridge in open alignment for safety and in harmony with the rustic surroundings for balance. The bridge, leading to the Morrison-Rockwood State Park, features not only a roadway but also a walkway and a bicycle path inviting you to experience the interconnectedness of the covered bridge of Whiteside County and the present.
